Madagascar is a unique blend of Africa and Indian OceanSeparated from africa about 165 millions years ago, madagascar knew since then a distinguished natural evolution from the rest of the world, having no more ground connexion.
As a consequence, our biodiversity turned different
80 % of our fauna & flora species are endemic. some people are calling Madagascar the noë arch... our island is a paradise for botanists, primatologists, or simply curious visitors.
You'll never see big animal gathering in Madagascar. You have to enter our forest and bush to spot our wild endemic lemurs, birds, chameleons or geckos, triangular palms, pandanus, tree ferns, orchids, aloes, or pachypodium...
Our national park network allows the visitor to have a good overview of our natural wonders. However, many others non classified places are also really interesting to fully enjoy what is unusual and authentic.
Always remember that you have to deserve our rich nature : only a few places can be visited by car in protected areas. Most of the time, you'll have to walk on trails (easy to difficult levels are available), but your efforts will be greatly rewarded !
People & culture
Beside its original and rich nature, madagascar is also the land of 18 ethnic groups. These groups are more resulting from former kingdoms than from real ethnic differences. Indeed, people from Madagascar nowadays are considering themselves firstly as "malagasy", even if sometimes you can feel a certain competition between them.
However, the language, the physical aspect and some of the traditions change from an ethnic group to another.
These differences are also a long lasting result of the first populating waves which were partly from africa and partly from indonesia. This blend of origins makes the culture even more interesting.
Everywhere diferent
Travelling through madagascar offers endless landscape changes from the large dry western plains up to the temperate central highlands, or to the narrow humid oriental coast.
Madagascar offers many forms of tourism, based on its exceptional natural conditions and welcoming population : by 4wd, by quad, on foot, using typical hut or more comfortable accommodation, tasting the malagasy cuisine or remaining on european standards.
Snorkelling, diving, cruising, waterskiing...everything is possible. Madagascar is a huge playing ground !
Madagascar, a certainty of something diferent
With less than 300 000 tourists per year, madagascar is still a destination where soft to harder adventure is possible far away from the tourist flood.
